At a Security Cabinet meeting, top Israeli officials gathered to review recent updates in the ongoing military operation in Gaza and to evaluate prospects for a possible agreement to secure the release of hostages. One of the matters that surfaced during the discussion was the continued presence of electricity in Gaza, prompting ministers to question why power is still available in the area.
Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer stated, “Hamas is blinking, military pressure has brought about a change in its position.”
Minister Ze’ev Elkin echoed the sentiment, adding, “We need to continue the military pressure and not stop.” Security officials who were present confirmed the shift in Hamas’s stance, saying, “there are significant changes in Hamas’s position.”
The conversation turned contentious over the status of electricity supply to Gaza. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir applauded Energy Minister Eli Cohen for shutting down the final power line, saying, “Kudos to Minister Cohen for disconnecting the electricity. We need to destroy all the power lines in Gaza.”
The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) addressed the concerns, explaining, “We are not transferring electricity to Gaza currently. There was one line and it has been disconnected, now there are mainly generators there. There is no electricity being transferred to Gaza. If there was, we would mention it to you. There is none.”
Ben Gvir pressed further, asking, “Then what is this electricity we see in use?” The coordinator clarified that the electricity being observed comes from privately operated generators.
Minister Orit Strock followed up by asking, “When does their diesel run out?” COGAT responded that it’s difficult to provide an exact estimate.
Later in the meeting, Ben Gvir escalated his demands, calling “To take away their generators, their internal power lines, to turn out their lights.”
In a sarcastic tone, National Security Council head Tzachi Hanegbi told the coordinator, “Turn off their sun, we need to darken Gaza, even during the day.”
Transportation Minister Miri Regev added with a joking remark, “He wants to give them a blackout before Pesach.”
