Elon Musk announced that his social media platform, X, had been hit by a “massive cyberattack” on Monday, leading to service disruptions for thousands of users.
“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X,” Musk posted on the platform Monday afternoon. “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing…”
Musk, in an interview Monday afternoon on Fox Business Network, told anchor Larry Kudlow that the company was still “not sure exactly what happened” but claimed the attack came from IP addresses “originating in the Ukraine area.” Kudlow interviewed Musk at Washington, D.C.’s Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Users began experiencing problems early Monday morning, with reports of issues surfacing within hours of the disruption.
According to Downdetector.com, a website that tracks online outages, reports of difficulties started coming in around 5:30 a.m. EDT, reaching a peak of nearly 21,000 by just before 6 a.m. The number of complaints declined significantly but surged again by 9:30 a.m.
Shortly after 10 a.m., the number of reported problems exceeded 41,000. Service appeared to be restored within approximately 45 minutes, but the disruptions resumed less than half an hour later. By 1 p.m. EDT, over 35,000 users had reported difficulties accessing the platform.
This latest disruption follows a similar incident last August when the Musk-owned platform experienced a major outage. During that incident, thousands of users reported being unable to log in, and some noticed that their feed displayed the incorrect date.
