Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu has announced his intention to appoint Eli Sharvit, a former commander of the Israeli Navy, as the new director of the Israel Security Agency, commonly known as the Shin Bet, according to a statement released Monday morning by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Sharvit brings with him 36 years of service in the Israel Defense Forces, including a five-year tenure as head of the Navy. During that time, he was instrumental in strengthening Israel’s maritime security infrastructure, particularly around its territorial economic waters, and directed sensitive and strategic missions against Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, “the Shin Bet is a distinguished organization that faced a severe crisis on October 7. The Prime Minister is confident that Major General Sharvit is the right person to lead the Shin Bet forward while upholding the organization’s proud legacy.”
Sharvit is set to succeed Ronen Bar, who was recently removed from his post following a unanimous vote by the cabinet.
The government previously determined that Bar’s term would officially end on April 10, 2025, or sooner, should a permanent replacement be installed before that date.
Just last week, the Supreme Court ruled against Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara’s position and permitted Netanyahu to proceed with interviewing candidates for the Shin Bet leadership.
Nevertheless, the Court upheld the current injunction preventing Bar’s dismissal for now, and scheduled a hearing for April 8 to consider the legal challenge against the government’s decision to remove him.
