Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu stated in the Knesset on Wednesday that the pressure the IDF will apply on Hamas will only intensify, including actions such as “seizing territory” and “doing other things” in Gaza if the terror group fails to release Israeli hostages. Netanyahu did not provide additional specifics on the nature of these actions.
His remarks were made during the “40 Signatures Debate,” a format similar to the British “Prime Minister’s Questions.” The debate involved a series of brief speeches delivered in the presence of the prime minister, followed by final speeches from both Netanyahu and the opposition leader.
During his address, Netanyahu once again reiterated his claims about a “deep state” conspiracy.
“Democracy is not in danger; the bureaucracy is in danger, the deep state is in danger,” the prime minister remarked. “When I say ‘bureaucracy,’ I mean a small group of officials struggling to maintain the levers of power in the country.”
“Democracy is, first and foremost, the rule of the people. It is not the rule of officials, not the rule of former leaders, and not the rule of media outlets. In a democracy, the people are sovereign, and they demand that their vote in the ballot box be reflected in policy. This does not mean the government has unlimited power. We do not have a tyrannical rule, but it is impossible to expect the government to have negligible power,” Netanyahu continued.
Opposition leader MK Yair Lapid focused his speech on criticizing the newly passed 2025 national budget, which became law on Tuesday. Lapid accused Netanyahu of orchestrating “the greatest theft in the history of the country” and blamed the prime minister for exploiting the Israeli middle class to further his political survival. “You exploit the Israeli middle class, squeeze it, all for one purpose: to survive politically,” Lapid stated to Netanyahu.
