Since assuming office on Monday, President Donald Trump has not fulfilled his campaign promise to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. During the 2023 CNN town hall, Trump stated, “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours.”
Trump has continuously asserted that, had he been reelected, Russian President Vladimir Putin would never have launched the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. On Thursday, Trump spoke remotely at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, answering questions following a lengthy and disjointed address.
A moderator at the forum asked, “Mr. President, when you’re back here in Davos next year, will there be then a peace agreement with Ukraine and Russia by then?” Trump responded:
“Well, you’re gonna have to ask Russia. Ukraine is ready to make a deal. Just so you understand, this is a war that should’ve never started. If I were president, it would never have started. This is a war that should have never, ever been started. And it wasn’t started during my– there was never even talk about it. I knew that it was the apple of President Putin’s eye, but I also knew that there was no way he was going in and he wasn’t going in. And then when I was out, uh, bad things happened, bad things were said. A lot of stupidity all around. And you end up with what you have now. You have all these bombed-out cities. They look like demolition sites with many people killed.”
The president has expressed doubts about the continued support for Ukraine, particularly foreign aid. Shortly after taking office, he paused U.S. foreign assistance programs for 90 days for a review. Additionally, a segment of the Republican Party in Congress has voiced strong opposition to providing further assistance to Ukraine. Vice President JD Vance, in his role as a senator last year, identified halting aid to Ukraine as his second-highest priority.
