All the living former first ladies came together to honor former President Jimmy Carter at his funeral on Thursday, with one notable exception—Michelle Obama.
Michelle Obama was unable to attend due to what were described as “scheduling conflicts,” according to journalist Jeff Zeleny in a report for CNN.
“She’s still in Hawaii,” Zeleny explained, pointing out that this left no available seat beside her husband, former President Barack Obama.
“Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former President,” her spokesperson conveyed to the press.
As a result of Michelle Obama’s absence, Barack Obama was seated between President-elect Trump and former first lady Laura Bush.
The former presidents and first ladies were positioned in the second row inside the Washington National Cathedral for the ceremony.
Video captured moments of Barack Obama and Trump smiling and sharing a laugh before the service commenced—images that may not have surfaced had Michelle Obama been present.
