The Trump administration is contemplating a new travel restriction policy that would affect citizens from 43 nations, including an outright travel ban for citizens of 11 countries, as reported by The New York Times on Friday.
Countries such as Iran, Libya, North Korea, and Venezuela are listed on the “red” category, where citizens would be completely prohibited from entering the U.S., the Times revealed.
Additionally, a further 10 nations, including Russia and Pakistan, are included on the “orange” list, where strict visa limitations would be imposed. The remaining countries are placed under the “yellow” category, which would give them 60 days to resolve any issues or concerns, the report mentioned.
These proposed restrictions are broader than the travel ban the Trump administration initially put in place in January 2017, which targeted seven countries with Muslim-majority populations. Most of those seven nations are now on the “red” list, except for Iraq, which is not subject to any kind of restriction or ban this time, according to the Times.
The State Department created this list of 43 nations several weeks ago, and alterations are expected as the White House continues to review it, the Times added.
The report notes that individuals from countries on the “orange” list, particularly those holding tourist visas, are likely to face the ban, while those traveling for business might still be permitted to enter. All visa applicants from these countries would also be required to attend an in-person interview, the Times stated.
Other nations on the “red” list include Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, according to the report.
The “orange” list also includes Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Turkmenistan, as reported by the Times.
The “yellow” list comprises Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe, according to the report.
