According to a report by The New York Jewish Week, Jews were the primary victims of hate crimes in New York City last year, based on statistics released by the NYPD.
The NYPD’s data revealed that in 2024, there were 345 incidents of anti-Jewish hate crimes in the city, accounting for nearly 54% of the 641 total hate crimes. Hate crimes related to sexual orientation came in second, with 78 reported cases.
The number of anti-Jewish hate crimes in 2024 was slightly higher than in 2023, when 323 such incidents were recorded. The rise in antisemitic crimes in 2023 followed Hamas’s October 7th attack, which triggered the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Despite the increase in antisemitism from one year to the next, the overall number of hate crimes in New York City saw a slight decline from 2023 to 2024.
Throughout 2024, several high-profile incidents of antisemitism were reported across New York City, which is home to the largest Jewish population in the United States.
The NYPD’s figures are preliminary and may be revised. It’s important to note that not every reported hate crime results in an arrest or prosecution.
