An IDF inquiry into the horrific massacre at the Supernova festival near Re’im has uncovered that the Hamas unit responsible for the attack initially set out to target the Netivot airbase. However, they lost their way during the mission.
According to Kan, the group was part of the Nuseirat Brigade, consisting of between 100 and 120 operatives led by battalion and company commanders. They entered Israel on the morning of the attack at 7:30 AM as part of a second wave, traveling in 14 trucks and two motorcycles.
The terrorists were heavily armed with two heavy machine guns, three medium machine guns, anti-tank RPGs, and SA 7 launchers for air defense. Additionally, each member of the group carried personal weapons such as Kalashnikov rifles and grenades.
However, due to a miscalculation in their navigation, the attackers veered off course, missing their intended target. Instead, they traveled eastward through Be’eri Forest, passed Kibbutz Beeri, and made their way along Route 232. They arrived in the festival area at around 8:10, but it wasn’t until 9:00 that they reached the actual festival site.
The terrorists left the festival grounds at approximately 10:10, heading north. Along the way, they encountered military forces and altered their course toward Be’eri. Those who had taken hostages at the festival quickly returned to Gaza, while those who attacked Be’eri were largely killed during the ensuing clashes.
In addition to the Nuseirat Brigade, other unaffiliated terrorists also participated in the assault on the Supernova festival. A tragic 364 individuals were murdered, most of them young adults, and 44 others were captured.
