Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has expressed that President Joe Biden deserves a place on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
Pelosi, 84, hailed the president as “such a consequential president of the United States, a Mount Rushmore kind of president,” during an interview on “CBS Sunday Morning.”
“You have Teddy Roosevelt up there, and he’s wonderful. I don’t say take him down. But you can add Biden,” she remarked when asked whether the president should be honored alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln on the iconic monument.
The creation of Mount Rushmore commenced in 1927 and concluded in 1941, a year before Biden’s birth.
Pelosi’s high regard for Biden came amidst allegations that she orchestrated a Democrat effort to expedite his departure from the 2024 presidential race.
Biden withdrew his reelection campaign last month after enduring heightened scrutiny regarding his physical and mental capability to serve, following a problematic debate in June against Republican contender and former President Donald Trump.
In an attempt to quell the growing concerns post-debate, Biden sent a letter to Democrat legislators in early July, asserting his “firmly committed” stance on remaining in the race. Shortly after, Pelosi mentioned on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that the decision to run was “up to the president.”
Reports indicate that California Democrat Reps. Adam Schiff and Zoe Lofgren, who are closely associated with Pelosi, also urged Biden to consider stepping aside.
On Sunday, Pelosi denied any involvement in leading the Capitol Hill revolt against the president.
“No, I wasn’t the leader of any pressure [campaign],” she stated. “Let me say things that I didn’t do: I didn’t call one person. I did not call one person. I could always say to him, ‘I never called anybody.'”
The former speaker also maintained that she never believed Biden needed to resign.
“No. My whole point was whatever he decides, but we have to have a more aggressive campaign,” Pelosi explained. “What I’m saying is I had confidence the president would make the proper choice for the country, whatever that would be — and I said that — whatever that is, we’ll go with.”
Reports suggest that Biden is “furious” with Pelosi over her rumored betrayal and efforts behind the scenes to terminate his campaign.
When questioned on Sunday about Biden’s current feelings toward her, Pelosi replied, “He knows that I love him very much.”
