Today, President Trump announced that he would impose an additional 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada in retaliation for Ontario’s decision to charge American consumers in parts of three border states an extra 25% for electricity.
The new tariff will be implemented on Wednesday morning, bringing the total tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%. Trump also insisted that Canada remove its steep tariff, ranging from 250% to 390%, on American dairy products.
This move by Trump followed closely on the heels of Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s decision to impose a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three U.S. states: New York, Michigan, and Minnesota. Ford has also warned that he may cut off these energy exports altogether.
“I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump further stated, “If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada.”
Looking ahead, Trump plans to introduce reciprocal tariffs on goods imported from various countries, including Japan and the European Union, beginning next month.
