The Pentagon has authorized the deployment of up to 3,000 active-duty troops to the southern border as part of efforts to strengthen the United States’ border security.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the order on Friday, with between 2,500 and 3,000 troops set to be stationed at the border.
Earlier this year, in January, the Pentagon sent up to 1,500 active-duty personnel to the border, joining the approximately 2,500 U.S. National Guard and Reserve forces already deployed.
“As directed by President Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered the deployment of a Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) and General Support Aviation Battalion to reinforce and expand current border security operations to seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States, a priority for the President,” a senior defense official told NewsNation.
These additional troops are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, emphasizing the Department’s continued commitment to partnering with the Department of Homeland Security to secure the southern border and protect the United States’ sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security, all under the leadership of President Trump.
Meanwhile, Mexican National Guard forces are patrolling the border in the Tijuana region as part of a pledge made by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during tariff talks with President Trump.
