Pennsylvania authorities have apprehended a suspect linked to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
During a press conference, the New York Police Department announced that 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania, located 280 miles from New York City, on firearms-related charges.
“It does seem that he has some ill will toward corporate America,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny stated at the press briefing.
“Our investigation is leaning toward he was acting alone,” Kenny added.
NYPD investigators are en route to Altoona, Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed on Monday. At this stage, Mangione has not been formally charged with Thompson’s murder.
The arrest concludes an almost week-long search for a masked and slender individual who allegedly ambushed the 50-year-old Minnesota native and father of two early Wednesday morning outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
Police received one or more tips from individuals who reported seeing someone at a McDonald’s restaurant who bore a resemblance to the shooter, according to various news sources. Over the past week, authorities have released multiple images of the suspect to the public.
Kenny shared that Mangione was recognized by a McDonald’s employee while dining at the restaurant.
Thompson was shot multiple times on a Manhattan sidewalk in what police described as a “brazen, targeted attack.”
The shooting occurred just steps from a side entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, where Thompson was scheduled to deliver remarks at UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference. The assailant, concealed by a hood, reportedly approached Thompson from behind and opened fire.
Police stated that the prominent health insurance executive sustained gunshot wounds to his back and right calf.
