Shortly into his second term, President Trump has reached the highest approval rating of his presidency, with more Americans now believing the country is on the right track than at any time since 2004, according to a new poll.
This marks a positive development, as reported by an NBC News Poll released on Sunday.
However, there is also less favorable news. Despite the boost, Trump has still not managed to win the majority of Americans over, with 54% expressing disapproval of his handling of the economy. This is the first time he has lost the majority on this issue in NBC’s poll.
Nonetheless, the poll revealed that voters generally believe Trump is bringing “the right kind of change” on important issues, including tariffs.
The poll showed that 41% of Americans support his trade policy changes, while 38% oppose them, according to NBC.
This comes despite a recent stock market decline, as Wall Street reacted to Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with a 20% tariff on China earlier this month.
On other significant issues, voters tended to agree with Trump’s actions. His policies on the border were the most popular, with 56% of respondents saying they were a positive change. Regarding government cuts, 47% supported his changes, compared to 29% who disagreed.
Even with regard to his handling of the Ukraine war and NATO—areas where Trump has faced considerable criticism—more respondents expressed approval (41% and 40%, respectively) than disapproval.
The NBC poll also suggested that voters may be showing some leniency toward Trump’s inflation policies. While 40% said his measures have had a positive impact, 30% viewed them negatively, and 28% saw no change.
Trump’s approval rating varies widely across party lines, with a substantial 90% of Republicans supporting him, while only 4% of Democrats do, according to the poll.
This gap between the approval ratings of a president’s own party and the opposition party is the largest in the last 80 years, as assessed by NBC.
The survey found that 47% of voters approve of Trump, while 51% disapprove. This marks his highest approval rating in the poll, equaling his previous peak of 47% in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, and again in October 2018.
NBC News’ findings are consistent with other polling results, including RealClearPolitics, which shows Trump’s average approval rating at 48.2%.
Trump’s current approval rating is significantly higher than where it stood at this time during his first term (44%), although it is still lower than the 53% approval rating that former President Joe Biden held during the same period, according to RCP.
Another positive for Trump is the finding that 44% of registered voters believe the country is on the right track, the highest percentage recorded in NBC News polling in two decades. Meanwhile, 54% still think the country is headed in the wrong direction.
Although the outlook remains somewhat negative, it marks the most optimistic view of the country’s direction since President George W. Bush’s time in office, 20 years ago.
This represents a significant shift from the previous administration. Just last September, only 28% of respondents told NBC News that the country was on the right track, with 65% believing it was heading in the wrong direction.
One of the major initiatives Trump has introduced during his second term is the establishment of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has faced protests from government workers and significant opposition from Democrats.
Despite its unpopularity, with 47% of respondents holding negative views and 41% positive, 46% of voters still consider the creation of DOGE a good idea, while 40% think it was a bad move.
Trump has remained steadfast in his support for DOGE and Elon Musk, despite the political criticism surrounding the cost-cutting initiative, which aims to reduce the federal deficit.
In a notable point for Trump, Democrats are experiencing historically low favorability ratings, with only 27% of Americans viewing the party positively and 55% having a negative view, the worst numbers in NBC News polling history.
Similarly, a poll from CNN found that the Democrats’ favorability rating was also at a record low, with just 29% of respondents viewing the party favorably.
Voters also expressed skepticism about the media’s coverage of Trump, with 46% saying it has been too critical, 25% feeling it has been too supportive, and 24% approving of the media’s approach.
The NBC News poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between March 7–11, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
