A group of prominent rabbonim arrived in Guatemala on Erev Shabbos to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the children of the Lev Tahor sect, labeling the group as a “terror organization.”
Among the delegation were Rav Chaim Yosef Dovid Weiss from Antwerp and Rav Yehoshua Hecht, an expert on dismantling cults from Canada.
“They are more dangerous than any terror organization in the world,” Rav Hecht stated during the visit. “Families were separated, and infants were taken from their parents just days after birth.” Overcome with emotion, Rav Hecht broke down in tears and made an impassioned plea to the authorities: “My heart goes out to these children. We ask to give them the help they need.”
Rav Weiss stressed the urgency of the situation, calling for immediate action: “I urge the authorities to do everything possible to give these children regular and happy lives. This cult is very dangerous.”
In December, authorities in Guatemala successfully rescued 160 children and 40 women from the cult’s compound in San Rosa, following reports of severe abuse and malnutrition. Sources close to the situation revealed that women in the cult are instructed to intentionally starve their children in a bid to pressure authorities for their release. Just last week, Uriel Goldman, one of the cult’s leaders, was filmed organizing manipulated interviews with cult women for local media.
