New reporting continues to emerge following the elimination of Hamas terror leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Tuesday night.
According to a new report, the decision to take out Haniyeh was made by Netanyahu due to Haniyeh’s opposition to a hostage deal. According to the reports, Haniyeh was actually a hardliner in negotions, and Israel hoped his elimination could help negotiations move towards a ceasefire/hostage release deal.
Haniyeh built a reputation for himself as a more pragmatic Hamas member, with media outlets accepting this assumption to the point that some referred to him as a more “moderate” member of Hamas after his death. International media outlets often refer to Haniyeh as a Hamas “political” leader, implying he was less of a threat than Hamas’s military terror operatives.
Earlier, reporting from the NY Times, which was later confirmed by Axios reporter Barak Ravid, revealed that Haniyeh was killed by a remotely detonated explosive device which had been planted in his room months prior. Israel allegedly learned which room Haniyeh stayed in every time he visited Tehran, and Mossad agents had a AI powered explosive device hidden inside. Once Mossad agents in Iran confirmed Haniyeh was inside the room, the device was remotely detonated.
The reporting also stated that the US Government was not warned about the assassination ahead of time.
The explosion also killed Haniyeh’s bodyguard, a Hamas terrorist who had taken part of the murder of five Israeli soldiers in 2014.
