Mohammed Deif, a prominent leader of the Hamas terrorist group and one of the masterminds behind the October 7 massacre, briefly entertained the idea of calling off the attack and postponing it to a later time. This revelation comes from a special investigation set to be published tomorrow by the Yediot Acharonot newspaper.
The investigation will disclose that, “after 5 a.m. on October 7, 2023, ‘Brother Haj Ali’, as Mohammad Deif is referred to for confidentiality in the internal documents of Hamas’ military wing, considered stopping everything. Deif wanted to order the cessation of the feverish preparations for the final hour, which had entered their final phase, and to freeze the planned attack until further notice.”
According to the findings, Deif reached out to his subordinates to inquire about the situation in Israel. Upon learning that nothing unusual was happening, he began to suspect that the IDF and Shin Bet were preparing a trap for him. This moment, described as one of the most dramatic to emerge from the IDF’s investigations into the October 7 failures, will be revealed in the report.
One Israeli intelligence official explained that Deif wanted to keep the attack a total secret, taking extreme precautions to ensure that no information about the attack leaked.
Ultimately, Deif, the leader of Hamas’s military wing, decided to proceed with the attack as originally planned. He was later killed in an Israeli airstrike in the al-Mawasi area in July.
