The Trump administration has entirely cut off all financial support for the Palestinian Authority’s security apparatus, the Washington Post reports based on information from both US and Palestinian Authority sources.
This move is part of a broader suspension of foreign aid implemented by the president.
Under the previous Trump administration, while funding for the Palestinian Authority was halted, there was still financial support for the training and reform of the PA’s security forces.
However, this new decision arrives at a particularly critical juncture, as the Palestinian Authority is facing significant challenges in maintaining its authority and legitimacy. Last December, the PA’s security forces launched a major operation in Jenin to dismantle competing militant factions.
In contrast to the approach taken by the current administration, the Biden administration has actively supported the PA, even attempting to place it in charge of the Gaza Strip, a position that goes against Israel’s stance.
