The New York State Attorney General has intervened to stop a discriminatory pricing practice at a car wash in Rockland County, where Jewish customers were being unfairly charged higher rates under the pretense that their cars required more cleaning.
An official inquiry determined that Super 4 Seasons Car Wash had, for years, taken advantage of Jewish clientele in the weeks before Pesach. The business imposed exorbitant fees—up to three times the regular cost—for the same cleaning services that were offered to others for much less.
The investigation, launched in April 2024 following several complaints from consumers, focused on the car wash’s annual “Passover Special.” This offer was promoted as a deep-cleaning package to help Jewish families eliminate chametz from their vehicles. However, Jewish customers were charged $169 for services that typically cost $47.
Rather than simply offering an optional holiday package, the car wash refused to provide standard cleaning rates to visibly Jewish customers. These customers were told they had to purchase the overpriced “Passover Package.” Meanwhile, other customers were still allowed to pay regular prices for the same service during the same timeframe.
To gather firsthand evidence, the Attorney General’s Office conducted undercover visits to the car wash. One investigator, dressed in traditional Chassidic clothing, was quoted the inflated $169 price. Another, dressed in ordinary clothing, was told the cost was just $47 for the same service.
When the undercover investigator questioned why they were being charged more, an employee reportedly replied, “It’s for you because your cars are so dirty.”
In the course of the investigation, the Attorney General’s team examined thousands of sales transactions. Their review confirmed that this pattern of charging Jewish customers more had been ongoing since at least 2018. In just two years—between 2022 and 2024—over 250 such “Passover Packages” were sold, bringing in more than $35,000 in profit from the inflated pricing. The practice was especially prevalent in Spring Valley and Monsey, areas with many frum communities.
In response, the Attorney General’s Office has ordered Super 4 Seasons to stop the discriminatory pricing immediately. The business is now barred from using religious affiliation as a basis for charging different prices. Although the company did not contest the claims, it agreed to abide by the new guidelines. Any breach of this agreement will trigger a penalty of $75,000.
“Targeting Jewish New Yorkers with deceptive pricing around Passover is a blatant act of religious discrimination, and it will not be tolerated,” said Attorney General Letitia James.
To raise awareness and help prevent similar issues in the future, the Attorney General’s Office has also released a consumer alert urging members of the Jewish community to remain vigilant for unfair pricing tactics in the lead-up to Pesach.
