Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Gaza is currently “not habitable” because of the dangers posed by unexploded munitions, and that residents will need to relocate while the area undergoes reconstruction.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to the Dominican Republic, Rubio urged other nations to take the initiative and assist in Gaza’s rebuilding process, though he refrained from commenting on whether Palestinians would be allowed to return under a plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump to take control and develop the Gaza Strip.
“I think that’s just a realistic reality, that in order to fix a place like that, people are going to have to live somewhere else in the interim,” Rubio remarks.
He explains that Trump’s contentious statements were partly intended to encourage countries with the necessary economic and technological capabilities to contribute to the rebuilding efforts.
“President Trump has offered to go in and be a part of that solution. If some other countries are willing to step forward and do it themselves, that would be great, but no one seems to be rushing forward to do that,” he notes.
Rubio further asserts that “countries in the region who express a lot of concern about the Palestinian people” should take responsibility and “find a solution and answer to their problem.”
