Russia unleashed a deadly missile barrage on President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown early Wednesday, mere hours after Kyiv signaled its approval of a US-backed cease-fire proposal with Moscow.
The nighttime strike on Kryvyi Rih resulted in the death of a 47-year-old woman and left at least nine others wounded. Several high-rise residential buildings sustained damage, along with a shop, an educational institution, and an infrastructure site, according to Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Serhiy Lysak.
Ever since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, Kryvyi Rih, the city where Zelensky was born, has repeatedly come under fire.
The missile assault took place just after the Trump administration announced it was resuming military assistance to Ukraine—aid that had previously been suspended. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials indicated they were willing to agree to a temporary halt in hostilities for a 30-day period.
“Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day cease-fire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation,” the two nations stated jointly.
“The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Washington would relay the proposal to the Kremlin, adding that the next move was up to Moscow.
Despite this, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov cautioned against making premature assumptions about Russia’s response to the cease-fire offer.
Speaking to reporters, Peskov explained that Moscow was still waiting for “detailed information” from the United States before it could formally decide on its stance.
At the same time, Russia carried out a heavy assault on the Black Sea port city of Odesa, launching both missiles and an estimated 133 drones overnight.
The strike on Odesa claimed the lives of four Syrian nationals and left two others injured—one Ukrainian and one Syrian—according to Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, who shared the information on Telegram.
The attack also caused damage to the MJ Pina, a Barbados-flagged ship that was in the process of loading wheat bound for Algeria, as well as another vessel and several grain storage facilities, Kuleba reported.
Meanwhile, another Russian strike hit the city of Dnipro, leaving one person wounded and inflicting destruction on various businesses, infrastructure sites, and approximately ten private residences, Ukrainian officials said.
