A top Kremlin official disclosed to Kan News on Monday that Russia is willing to help broker a deal between Israel and Lebanon.
The official told Kan, “Russia is prepared to assist and support anything that would stop the killing of civilians and prevent the destruction of civilian infrastructure.”
Given Russia’s strong ties with anti-Western countries, including Iran, a major supporter of Hezbollah, there is optimism that Moscow could potentially sway the terrorist organization to agree to an accord between Israel and Lebanon.
Channel 12 reported on Sunday evening that Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer traveled to Russia last week for a four-day visit aimed at involving Moscow in the negotiations and persuading the Kremlin to support efforts for a resolution.
According to this report, sources familiar with the discussions indicate that there has been notable progress toward reaching a deal.
Dermer is also scheduled to travel to Washington this week for meetings with President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump.
The report further noted that several parts of the agreement have been drafted, though they remain unfinished. A major point under negotiation is a U.S. commitment to allow Israel freedom of action should Hezbollah breach the agreement and rearm itself.
