Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters Tuesday morning that President Biden’s mental acuity is “great,” responding to concerns stirred by a special counsel’s report that said the president has a “poor memory.”
“I talk to President Biden regularly. Usually several times in a week. His mental acuity is great, it’s fine, it’s as good as it’s been over the years,” Schumer said in response to a question.
“I’ve been speaking to him for 30 years since we worked on the Brady Bill, the assault weapons ban when I was a young congressman,” Schumer said.
“He’s fine. All this right-wing propaganda that his mental acuity has declined is wrong,” Schumer said.
Democratic senators have not broached the topic of Biden’s age or cognitive abilities as a political liability during their caucus gatherings. However, there are private concerns among some Democrats regarding public opinion polls indicating that a significant portion of voters perceive Biden as too old for the presidency.
An ABC News/Ipsos survey released on Sunday revealed that 59 percent of Americans believe both Biden and former President Trump are not suited for another term in office due to their age.
Similarly, an NBC News poll from the previous week showed that three-quarters of voters, including half of Democratic voters, harbor apprehensions about Biden’s mental and physical well-being.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer brushed aside the significance of these polls, asserting that Biden remains well-positioned to secure a second term. Schumer highlighted Biden’s strong track record, the increasing recognition of his accomplishments among Americans, the improving economy, and widespread concerns, even among Republicans, about the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency.
On Tuesday, the Labor Department released data indicating a 3.1 percent increase in consumer prices compared to the previous year. While this marked a decrease from December’s 3.4 percent rise, it slightly exceeded economists’ expectations, who had projected a 2.9 percent inflation rate for January.
