Senator Tom Cotton stated on Sunday that Americans will likely be reluctant to support Vice President Kamala Harris as a leader once they become more familiar with her, calling for increased media examination of the Democratic candidate who recently ascended to a prominent position.
“When the American people get a better look at her and her radical positions, I think you’re gonna see that they don’t want her to continue the Biden-Harris legacy,” Cotton remarked on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Sunday.
The Arkansas Senator criticized Harris for not providing opportunities for unscripted interactions with the press since becoming the presumptive nominee two weeks ago. He asserted that when she finally engages with the media, she will need to address her stances on matters such as energy and firearms policies.
“Kamala Harris has only been the nominee for two weeks and hasn’t answered a single question,” he commented, emphasizing that it is “incumbent upon the media” to hold Harris to the same level of scrutiny as candidates who secure the nomination through the primary process.
“Donald Trump in ’16, Barack Obama in ’08 — they all had to go through more than a year of testing at town halls and VFWs and debates because they earned the nomination,” Cotton told moderator Ed O’Keefe. “Kamala Harris had it given to her.”
Cotton accused Harris of avoiding the press since receiving President Biden’s endorsement two weeks ago.
“She can’t dodge the press for another 13 weeks,” he stated.
These remarks were made in the context of increasing voter enthusiasm for the Democratic ticket following President Biden’s decision to step aside, which has reshaped the presidential race. Recent CBS News polling indicates that Harris holds a 1-point lead over former President Donald Trump nationally, a margin that Biden never achieved. The poll also revealed that Harris and Trump are currently tied in key battleground states.
