Reverend Al Sharpton has announced plans to lead a demonstration against President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Speaking on his MSNBC show Politics Nation with Al Sharpton on Tuesday, Sharpton shared that the rally will take place on the same day Trump is sworn in as president. According to The Hill, the event is scheduled for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“While Trump supporters will be on one side of Washington watching him take the oath of office, I will be at the nation’s capital working to keep the dream alive,” Sharpton declared. “There has never been a more important time to peacefully organize and mobilize.”
Emphasizing the importance of nonviolence, Sharpton assured the public that the rally will stand in stark contrast to the “2021 insurrection.”
Trump has drawn criticism in the past for his comments about Dr. King.
He inaccurately claimed that the crowd at his 2020 inauguration matched the size of the audience at King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall. Additionally, Trump has controversially likened Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, a Republican candidate for governor in North Carolina, to the civil rights leader.
Sharpton expressed that the upcoming rally will send a powerful message to the country, emphasizing the enduring relevance of Dr. King’s principles. “We fought too hard. We suffered too long. We took too many beatings. We spent too many nights in jail. We’ve been to too many funerals,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to the cause. In a related post on social media, he added, “We won’t go back.”
