Shas’ affiliated publication Haderech issued a clear message Thursday morning, warning that if no substantial movement is made on passing the Draft Law, the party’s Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah will gather immediately after Shavuos to deliberate whether Shas should exit the current coalition.
The front page of the newspaper led with the headline: “As the deadline set by our revered sages of the Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah approaches for reaching significant agreements on the law, efforts have intensified in recent days.” Still, the article admitted that “no agreements have been reached so far.”
According to the report, the party’s senior rabbinic leadership is expected to assemble right after the Yom Tov to discuss next steps and evaluate whether remaining in the coalition aligns with their goals and values.
“Immediately following Shavuot, the question of Shas’ continued participation in the government and coalition will be placed on the table of our revered sages. We hope the Prime Minister will take responsibility and expedite negotiations immediately.”
In the midst of heightened coalition friction over the unresolved status of the Draft Law, a notable meeting took place Wednesday night between Rav Aharon Mordechai Rokeach, the Belzer Rebbe’s son, and Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch. Their discussion centered on the ongoing standoff with the government and various options under consideration.
The encounter is being viewed as particularly meaningful, given that the Belzer Rebbe is currently against dissolving the coalition under present conditions—an opinion that contrasts sharply with that of the Gerrer Rebbe, who advocates for ending the alliance.
