A law firm with strong connections to George and Alexander Soros’s network of left-wing advocacy organizations and NGOs is involved in a lawsuit aimed at blocking President Donald Trump’s efforts to deport illegal alien gang members from the U.S. under the Alien Enemies Act, Breitbart News has discovered.
Over the weekend, the Trump administration invoked the Alien Enemies Act to begin deporting illegal alien gang members to El Salvador as part of an arrangement with President Nayib Bukele. The deal permits the United States to fly foreign gang members to El Salvador, where they will be detained in a large prison for an annual fee.
Shortly after Trump enacted the Alien Enemies Act and began deporting nearly 300 gang members linked to Tren de Aragua and MS-13 — both designated terrorist groups — to El Salvador, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Democracy Forward filed a lawsuit aimed at halting the operation.
The lawsuit involves five illegal aliens held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, who are accused of being part of gangs and are challenging the use of the Alien Enemies Act to justify their potential deportation from the U.S.
A federal judge has since issued an order requiring the cessation of such deportations. However, according to the administration, the gang members who were scheduled for deportation over the weekend had already arrived in El Salvador by the time the order was issued.
Democracy Forward, which is assisting the ACLU in representing the illegal aliens in their lawsuit against the Trump administration, has strong financial ties to Soros’s network.
The firm’s clients and partners include progressive organizations like the Center for American Progress, the National Immigration Law Center, Color of Change, UnidosUS, Common Justice, and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, among others.
The Open Society Foundation, chaired by George Soros and currently led by his son, Alexander Soros, has funded several of Democracy Forward’s clients and partners. For example, in 2023, the Open Society Foundation granted Color of Change $3 million, following nearly $1.5 million in support in 2018 and 2019.
Additionally, the Open Society Foundation remains one of the largest contributors to the Center for American Progress, an influential group often viewed as the unofficial policy arm of the Democratic Party. In 2023 alone, the foundation provided nearly $4 million in funding to the organization.
The Open Society Foundation has also donated millions to the National Immigration Law Center and hundreds of thousands to UnidosUS, Common Justice, and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network.
Democracy Forward and the ACLU are now asking a federal court to investigate whether the Trump administration violated the judge’s order to halt the deportation of illegal alien gang members.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that the administration did not ignore the court order. Instead, the order came after the deportation flights had already taken place.
“The written order and the administration’s actions do not conflict,” Leavitt said in her statement.
“Moreover, as the Supreme Court has repeatedly made clear — federal courts generally have no jurisdiction over the President’s conduct of foreign affairs, his authorities under the Alien Enemies Act, and his core Article II powers to remove foreign alien terrorists from U.S. soil and repel a declared invasion,” she continued. “A single judge in a single city cannot direct the movements of an aircraft carrier full of foreign alien terrorists who were physically expelled from U.S. soil.”
