White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller offered high praise for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, likening him to one of the most influential diplomats of the last century. During an appearance on Fox News with Laura Ingraham, Miller addressed speculation surrounding the possibility of President Donald Trump formally naming Rubio as national security adviser, a role he currently holds on an interim basis following Mike Waltz’s departure. “We have a tremendous national security adviser right now. His name is Marco Rubio. I have gotten to know Marco so well, I consider him a close friend. He’s doing an extraordinary job. He will be the Kissinger of our time,” Miller said.
The historical reference was to Henry Kissinger, who served as secretary of state during the Nixon and Ford administrations and left a lasting mark on global diplomacy. Kissinger helped open relations with China, spearheaded arms negotiations with the Soviet Union, and shaped America’s strategy as the Vietnam War drew to a close.
In his current position, Rubio has faced the challenge of navigating President Trump’s shifting policies on major global conflicts, including those in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as managing controversial comments about military action against allied nations. Nevertheless, Miller emphasized his admiration for Rubio’s performance. “I’m just proud to work alongside [Rubio] in my role as deputy chief and homeland security adviser,” he told Ingraham.
According to Miller, he and Rubio have forged a strong partnership, particularly in advancing the administration’s sweeping immigration agenda. The two “are working very closely together” on Trump’s mass deportation effort. “Let me tell you, President Trump made the right choice with this appointment,” Miller said.
