Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz might run for Senate next year instead of running for governor again in 2026, according to a person close to the governor, Politico reported. The news comes a day after Sen. Tina Smith announced her intention to retire.
“This decision is not political; it is entirely personal,” Smith said in a video on Wednesday. “I plan to use every single day working as hard as I can to represent your interests in the United States Senate and make sure that your voices are heard.”
Smith, whose term runs out in two years, said she was leaving office to spend more time with her growing family.
A host of potential candidates have floated the possibility of a run. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan launched a bid via social media, writing: “I love Minnesota, and my intention is to run for United States Senate and continue to serve the people of this state.” Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar may also be exploring a run. “Congresswoman Omar will be talking with Minnesotans about the future of the Senate seat and DFL party in Minnesota,” a spokesperson told Politico.
