Israeli military sources believe that during the recent bombing of a tunnel complex in Khan Yunis, Hamas’s Gaza-based leader Mohammed Sinwar may have been accompanied by several high-ranking figures, including Mohammed Shabana, commander of the group’s Rafah Brigade.
Defense insiders also said it’s very possible that Abu Obaida, the masked spokesperson known as the public face of Hamas, was in the same location with Sinwar at the time of the strike.
Shabana holds a key position within the terror group’s leadership. He’s one of the most senior commanders still operating and has narrowly escaped multiple targeted killing attempts by Israeli forces over the years.
He’s in charge of four Hamas battalions, including the notorious Nukhba force, which played a leading role in the horrific assault against Israeli civilians on October 7.
On Tuesday, the Israeli Air Force unleashed a barrage of nearly 40 specialized bunker-penetrating munitions, estimated to weigh around a ton collectively, in an operation reminiscent of past attempts to eliminate Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah while he was hiding underground.
As of now, Hamas has not disclosed who, if anyone, was killed in the Israeli military’s operation.
