Daniel Rubin tragically lost his life in a car accident in Antwerp, Belgium, on Wednesday night, just two weeks before he and his twin brother, Netanel, were set to celebrate their bar mitzvah. Itzik Rubin, Daniel’s father, is originally from Israel.
The Rubin family, residing in Hendon, London, had traveled to Antwerp on Wednesday to join in the celebration of their aunt’s engagement. On their way back from the event, while traveling along the E40 highway heading toward France, their vehicle was involved in the accident.
The car, which was carrying six individuals, rolled over, and Daniel was ejected from the vehicle, leading to his death. Despite the prompt arrival of emergency responders, efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
Just a week prior, Daniel and his family had visited Israel in preparation for his bar mitzvah. During their trip, Daniel expressed a desire to support the IDF, leading the family to donate military supplies to the reservists of the Negev Brigade, currently stationed in Gaza. Daniel’s father requested that this donation should serve as a merit for the soldiers, so they may return home safely, and as a tribute to Daniel’s memory.
Daniel will be buried in London tonight at 10:00 p.m. local time.
The five other people in the vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to federal police. The cause of the accident remains unclear, and traffic authorities are continuing to investigate the scene.
