President Donald Trump issued a pointed critique on Thursday, slamming the United States as “stupid” for continuing to permit birthright citizenship—a policy that his administration has challenged and that is now under review by the Supreme Court.
“Big case today in the United States Supreme Court. Birthright Citizenship was not meant for people taking vacations to become permanent Citizens of the United States of America, and bringing their families with them, all the time laughing at the ‘SUCKERS’ that we are!” Trump posted on Truth Social early Thursday morning.
He continued, “The United States of America is the only Country in the World that does this, for what reason, nobody knows — But the drug cartels love it! We are, for the sake of being politically correct, a STUPID Country but, in actuality, this is the exact opposite of being politically correct, and it is yet another point that leads to the dysfunction of America.”
The nation’s highest court is now hearing arguments tied to Trump’s executive order aimed at denying automatic citizenship to children born on U.S. soil whose parents are in the country without legal status or on a temporary basis, the Associated Press reported.
At issue are emergency appeals filed by the Trump administration seeking to overturn rulings by lower courts that blocked the enforcement of the order nationwide.
Thursday’s session will also examine a broader legal question: whether federal judges have the constitutional authority to issue sweeping injunctions that extend beyond the individual cases before them. Both the Trump and Biden administrations have voiced concern that such nationwide rulings grant excessive power to the judiciary.
In his social media post, Trump maintained that the original purpose of birthright citizenship was to safeguard the rights of children born to former slaves—not those born to illegal immigrants.
“As conclusive proof, the Civil War ended in 1865, the Bill went to Congress less than a year later, in 1866, and was passed shortly after that,” he wrote.
“It had nothing to do with Illegal Immigration for people wanting to SCAM our Country, from all parts of the World, which they have done for many years. It had to do with Civil War results, and the babies of slaves who our politicians felt, correctly, needed protection. Please explain this to the Supreme Court of the United States.”
