President Trump has announced his intention to buy a Tesla as a way of backing Elon Musk’s “baby,” following a steep drop in the car manufacturer’s stock and a series of boycotts linked to its billionaire CEO’s involvement with the White House.
Trump quickly stepped up in support of Musk, pushing back against what he called “Radical Left Lunatics” who have been demonstrating against Tesla nationwide. These protests erupted as Musk, now at the helm of the Department of Government Efficiency, has been making aggressive cuts to government spending and employment.
“To Republicans, Conservatives, and all great Americans, Elon Musk is ‘putting it on the line’ in order to help our Nation, and he is doing a FANTASTIC JOB!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post just past midnight on Tuesday.
“But the Radical Left Lunatics, as they often do, are trying to illegally and collusively boycott Tesla, one of the World’s great automakers, and Elon’s ‘baby,’ in order to attack and do harm to Elon, and everything he stands for.”
The president stated that to demonstrate his trust in Musk, he would be purchasing a Tesla first thing in the morning. Musk, who also leads SpaceX and the social media company X, has become a target of increasing opposition.
“In any event, I’m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American,” he wrote. “Why should he be punished for putting his tremendous skills to work in order to help MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN???”
At this time, it remains unclear which Tesla model Trump intends to purchase.
Since Trump took office, Tesla’s stock initially surged but has since taken a dramatic downturn, losing nearly a third of its value. Over the last month, the company’s shares have fallen by more than 28%, with a total decline of almost 32% since the start of the year.
Public demonstrations against Musk and his cost-cutting measures have taken place outside Tesla dealerships in various cities, including New York, where six protesters were taken into custody on Saturday following an incident at a showroom in Manhattan.
Last month, a Tesla dealership in Colorado was targeted in an act of vandalism when a 40-year-old woman allegedly defaced the building with graffiti reading “Nazi cars” and attempted to set vehicles on fire using Molotov cocktails.
Tesla owners have also reported an increase in vandalism directed at their vehicles. Some have opted to remove the Tesla logo and replace it with emblems from other car brands in an effort to deter attacks—or simply to distance themselves from Musk and his political affiliations.
