President Trump declared that he would be partially lifting the 25% tariff on imports from Mexico, attributing the decision to enhanced border enforcement efforts by the neighboring country.
“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The former president stated that the policy change would remain in effect until April 2nd, emphasizing that it was a gesture of goodwill toward the Mexican leader. “This Agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!”
Trump had initially implemented the broad 25% tariff on goods from both Mexico and Canada earlier in the week, justifying the move as a response to illegal immigration and the influx of fentanyl.
Newly released data from this week indicates that the number of illegal border crossings in February plunged to its lowest level in at least a quarter of a century. The decline follows Trump’s return to the White House, where he has vowed large-scale deportations, alongside Sheinbaum’s commitment to strengthening Mexico’s security forces.
