Former President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of Jason Galanis, a former associate of Hunter Biden, who was convicted for defrauding a Native American tribe.
The commutation, signed on March 28, directed acting director of the US Bureau of Prisons, William Lothrop, to “immediately release” Galanis from federal custody. He had been incarcerated at a correctional facility in Montgomery, Alabama, serving a 14-year term.
Galanis had briefly provided information last year to Republican lawmakers as they probed Hunter Biden’s business activities. He had previously entered a guilty plea in connection with a $60 million fraud involving fake tribal bonds, for which he received a 189-month prison sentence in September 2020.
While still incarcerated, Galanis gave virtual testimony to House Republicans, sharing details of a 2014 meeting involving then-Vice President Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and the former mayor of Moscow.
“You be good to my boy,” Galanis recounted Biden saying to former Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and his wife, billionaire businesswoman Yelena Baturina, during their May 4, 2014 encounter.
Just two months prior to that meeting, Baturina had wired $3.5 million to a company managed by Hunter Biden and Devon Archer. Archer later partnered with Galanis in the fraudulent tribal bond sales and was granted a full pardon by Trump only days ago.
Galanis and Archer were charged in 2016 for their roles in the scheme, and Archer was ultimately convicted in 2018, receiving a one-year prison sentence.
“I think he was treated very unfairly,” Trump said last Tuesday, shortly before granting Archer a pardon at the White House.
“And I looked at the record, studied the record, and he was a victim of a crime, as far as I’m concerned. So we’re going to undo that.”
Archer, who also gave testimony to GOP congressional investigators regarding Joe Biden’s participation in calls with Hunter Biden’s overseas business contacts, had been ordered to pay $43.4 million in restitution and forfeit an additional $15.7 million.
At the time of the fraudulent transactions, Hunter Biden was vice chairman of Burnham Financial Group and earned a $200,000 salary, according to evidence presented in court and emails retrieved from his abandoned laptop.
Legal filings indicated that Burnham Securities, which handled the sale of the bonds, was overseen by Burnham Financial Group.
In the final stretch of his presidency, Joe Biden issued a broad pardon to his son, clearing him of tax and gun-related charges, as well as any other potential offenses committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024.
Following his pardon, Archer told The Post that he was appreciative of Trump and his family for their support during his legal troubles. He also thanked Tony Bobulinski, another former associate of the Bidens, who validated several claims tied to alleged foreign business dealings involving Joe Biden.
