President Donald Trump accused members of the Democratic Party in government of embezzling “billions of dollars,” alleging that much of this money was funneled to media organizations as a form of “payoff” for favorable coverage.
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, a group focused on identifying ways to streamline government operations and cut costs, has centered its attention on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
“LOOKS LIKE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS HAVE BEEN STOLLEN AT USAID, AND OTHER AGENCIES, MUCH OF IT GOING TO THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA AS A ‘PAYOFF’ FOR CREATING GOOD STORIES ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS,” Trump posted on Truth Social Thursday morning.
“THE LEFT WING ‘RAG,’ KNOWN AS ‘POLITICO,’ SEEMS TO HAVE RECEIVED $8,000,000. Did the New York Times receive money??? Who else did??? THIS COULD BE THE BIGGEST SCANDAL OF THEM ALL, PERHAPS THE BIGGEST IN HISTORY! THE DEMOCRATS CAN’T HIDE FROM THIS ONE. TOO BIG, TOO DIRTY!”
Democratic lawmakers have strongly criticized Musk for focusing on USAID, particularly his gaining access to sensitive and classified information from several government agencies.
In a statement issued on Monday, the White House titled its release “At USAID, Waste and Abuse Runs Deep,” outlining several “pet projects of entrenched bureaucrats” that included: • $1.5 million to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in Serbia’s business and workplace environments • $2.5 million for the development of electric vehicles in Vietnam • $2 million directed toward sex changes and LGBT activism in Guatemala • $6 million allocated for tourism development in Egypt • Millions of dollars sent to EcoHealth Alliance, a group involved in research at the Wuhan lab • Hundreds of millions of dollars spent on irrigation projects, farming equipment, and fertilizer to support the production of poppy cultivation and heroin in Afghanistan, ultimately benefiting the Taliban
Last month, the Trump administration placed around 60 senior officials at USAID on leave after implementing a global freeze on aid.
This week, reports emerged that USAID employees were instructed not to report to the agency’s Washington headquarters following Musk’s announcement that Trump had agreed with him to shut down the agency.
Politico reported on Tuesday that the administration plans to put nearly the entire USAID staff in Washington, D.C., on leave.
