President Donald Trump dismissed reports that his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, would assume responsibility for Iran-related matters while also praising Witkoff for his role in facilitating the cease-fire and hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas.
“No,” Trump replied on Thursday after signing a number of executive orders, when a reporter inquired whether Witkoff would be tasked with overseeing the Iran strategy and direct negotiations with Iranian officials. “But he’s certainly somebody I would use. He’s done a fantastic job. He’s a great negotiator.”
When asked about his position on supporting an Israeli military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump opted not to respond directly. Instead, he expressed his hope for a diplomatic resolution with Iran.
“It would really be nice if that could be worked out without having to go to that further step,” Trump said, referring to the possibility of military action. “Iran hopefully will make a deal. I mean, if they don’t make a deal, I guess that’s okay, too.”
