On Monday, President Trump posted a picture of himself displaying a version of the Declaration of Independence in the Oval Office. He had requested this copy from the National Archives.
“The Nationals Archives delivered the Declaration of Independence to the White House at the President’s request. It is displayed in the Oval Office where it will be carefully protected and preserved,” said press secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement to The Hill.
The president shared the image on X, showing himself pulling back a curtain in the Oval Office to unveil the framed document hanging on the wall.
The White House did not provide further details, including information regarding the copy or the loan from the museum. The National Archives also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The original, signed Declaration of Independence is displayed at the National Archives building on Constitutional Avenue in Washington, D.C., where it has been since 1952. While the original is worn and faded, the version in the Oval Office appeared to be clear and easy to read, according to The Associated Press.
Reports indicated that Trump had inquired with his advisers about relocating a historic version of the Declaration of Independence to the Oval Office. Earlier this month, The Atlantic revealed that the president had expressed interest in this idea. Traditionally, artwork and historical items are loaned to the White House from institutions like the Smithsonian Museums, such as the National Gallery of Art, with these items typically changing when a new president or first lady takes office.
