On Monday, President Donald Trump suggested that David Friedman, who previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, could be a contender for the role of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. This came after the White House decided to pull Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination for the position.
While addressing reporters in the Oval Office, Trump remarked, “I can tell you that for the replacement [for Stefanik], we have a lot of people that have asked about it and would like to do it – David Friedman, Ric Grenell, and maybe 30 other people.”
He continued, “Everyone loves that position. That’s a star-making position. And so we’ll see what happens, but we have a lot of people that are interested in going to the United Nations, as you can imagine.”
Trump explained that the decision to drop Stefanik’s nomination was motivated by a desire to protect the GOP’s narrow control of the House of Representatives.
Stefanik gained national recognition for her sharp questioning of university leaders during a House Education Committee hearing, where she exposed their unwillingness to state unequivocally that advocating for the genocide of Jews violated campus policies. The hearing addressed the surge in antisemitism at colleges across the country.
David Friedman held the ambassadorship to Israel throughout Trump’s first term, from 2017 through 2021, and was referred to by The New York Times as “one of America’s most influential envoys.”
Among his notable accomplishments during his tenure, Friedman played a critical role in facilitating the relocation of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Yerushalayim.
