Former US President Donald Trump held his first campaign rally since the assassination attempt last week, addressing a crowd in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and declaring he “took a bullet for democracy.”
“I shouldn’t be here right now, but something very special happened,” Trump remarked. He continued, “They keep saying he’s a threat to democracy. I’m saying, ‘What the … did I do to democracy?’ Last week I took a bullet for democracy.”
Trump’s reference was to a frequent talking point used by Democrats. He added, “What did I do against democracy? Crazy.”
The former President, who spoke for nearly two hours, expressed gratitude to the staff at Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was taken immediately after the shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last week.
Trump honored Corey Comperatore, who was fatally shot during the assassination attempt, calling him a “hero.” He also mentioned the two injured rallygoers, David Dutch and James Copenhaver.
“Together we will fight, fight, fight, right?” Trump reiterated, echoing his words after the shots were fired at the rally. “And we will win, win, win.”
Trump commended the organizers of the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee, where he accepted the Republican presidential nomination, praising the city as a “fantastic place.”
