Time Magazine has revealed its list of ten contenders for the prestigious Person of the Year title, an accolade the publication has been awarding annually since 1927.
Among the nominees are President-Elect Donald Trump, who recently secured victory in the U.S. presidential election; Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and business mogul; and Kamala Harris, the outgoing Vice President.
Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, was also nominated following her announcement to carry on her late husband’s activism after his passing. Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell made the list as well, despite facing significant criticism from President-Elect Trump.
Joe Rogan, a popular podcaster with millions of followers, was included for his political influence, particularly his vocal support for Trump during the election. Rogan has drawn controversy for remarks such as, “The idea that Jewish people are not into money is ridiculous. That’s like saying Italians aren’t into pizza. It’s f-ing stupid.”
The nominees also feature the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, who faced a personal battle with cancer this year; Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and CEO of Meta; and Claudia Sheinbaum, who became Mexico’s first Jewish and female president.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been a central figure during the war initiated by Hamas on October 7, 2023, is also among the nominees. The magazine’s profile of Netanyahu highlights his role in the ongoing conflict: “Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been one of the most influential and controversial world leaders this year. Defying criticism of his war on Hamas, the terrorist organization that killed 1,200 people in an attack against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Netanyahu continued his military assault on the Gaza Strip this year, even as the death toll there rose to 44,056, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. In September, Netanyahu expanded the war to Lebanon in the north, as Israel killed much of the leadership of Iran’s proxy, Hezbollah, with air strikes and using explosives hidden in pagers. ‘We’re in the midst of a war, a seven-front war,’ Netanyahu told TIME in August. ‘I think we have to concentrate on one thing: winning.’ In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu, his former defense minister, and Hamas’ military chief, on allegations of crimes against humanity. Netanyahu was on the TIME100 list in 2019.”
The Person of the Year, chosen from these ten nominees, will be announced on Thursday.
