President-elect Donald Trump announced Friday that Karoline Leavitt, who served as his campaign spokeswoman, will take on the role of White House press secretary.
Leavitt, 27, previously held the position of national press secretary for Trump’s campaign and worked in his first administration as an assistant press secretary.
Her appointment sets a new record, as she will become the youngest individual ever to assume the role of White House press secretary.
“Karoline Leavitt did a phenomenal job as the National Press Secretary on my Historic Campaign, and I am pleased to announce she will serve as White House Press Secretary,” Trump stated in his announcement.
“Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator,” Trump added. “I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium, and help deliver our message to the American People as we, Make America Great Again.”
Leavitt previously ran for Congress in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District during the 2022 midterm elections. While she successfully won her Republican primary, she was defeated in the general election by Democratic Representative Chris Pappas.
Her political experience also includes serving as a spokeswoman for Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who Trump has tapped to serve as ambassador to the United Nations.
Leavitt will be the fifth individual to serve as White House press secretary during Trump’s time in office. Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Stephanie Grisham, and Kayleigh McEnany each held the position during Trump’s first term.
At 29 years old, Ron Ziegler, who served as White House press secretary under President Richard Nixon, had previously held the distinction of being the youngest person in the role.
Earlier in the day, Trump revealed that Steven Cheung, a longtime communications advisor, will return as director of communications in his upcoming administration.
Additionally, Sergio Gor, CEO of Don Jr.’s Winning Team Publishing, will take over as director of the Presidential Personnel Office.
“Steven Cheung and Sergio Gor have been trusted Advisors since my first Presidential Campaign in 2016 and have continued to champion America First principles throughout my First Term, all the way through our Historic Victory in 2024,” Trump noted in a statement.
