President Trump offered a backhanded compliment to his predecessor, President Joe Biden, acknowledging his remarkable skill in falling asleep quickly.
“The only thing I admired about sleepy Joe Biden is the following,” Trump remarked during an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, which aired on Tuesday. “He’d go to a beach, lay down on a cot — barely able to get his feet through the sand — he’d lay down and within minutes he’s sleeping and have cameras watching.”
Trump continued by saying, “I could never do that. I would never be able to sleep like that. That’s the only thing that I think that was wonderful. It was a disaster, this man was a disaster.”
During Trump’s first term, White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson reported that the president was managing on just four to five hours of sleep per night.
“I don’t sleep much,” Trump revealed to Ingraham this week. “A lot of people that love what they are doing don’t sleep much, I find. And so far it’s been OK.”
Throughout Biden’s time in office, Trump often taunted him with the nickname “sleepy Joe,” continuing his tradition of assigning derogatory monikers to his political opponents, such as “Little Marco [Rubio]” and “Crooked Hillary [Clinton].”
Biden spent a considerable amount of time vacationing in Rehoboth Beach and was frequently seen relaxing by the water.
On the campaign trail, Trump mocked Biden’s beach attire, expressing confusion about why the 46th president was so comfortable being photographed near the ocean.
“He goes to the beach all the time,” Trump said with a laugh at a rally last October. “Somebody told him he looks great in a bathing suit. Typically — typically — an 82-year-old man does not look great in a bathing suit. There may be a couple, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it.”
Despite these remarks, Trump later revealed that Biden had left him an “inspirational” message at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office during the transition, following the customary practice.
“My prayer is that in the coming years will be a time of prosperity, peace, and grace for our nation,” Biden wrote in the note. “May God bless you and guide you as He has blessed and guided our beloved country since our founding.”
Earlier this week, Trump took another swipe at Biden by removing Secret Service protection for his children, Ashley and Hunter Biden.
He also questioned the legitimacy of the pardons granted by the 46th president, casting doubt on their authenticity due to Biden’s use of an autopen.
