Donald Trump has announced plans to open hundreds of coal-based power plants across the U.S., vowing to take the fight to “Environmental Lunatics” by producing “Beautiful, Clean Coal.”
In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote: “After years of being held captive by Environmental Extremists, Lunatics, Radicals, and Thugs, allowing other Countries, in particular China, to gain tremendous Economic advantage over us by opening up hundreds of all Coal Fire Power Plants, I am authorizing my Administration to immediately begin producing Energy with BEAUTIFUL, CLEAN COAL.”
Coal accounts for only 15 percent of power generation in the U.S., down from over 50 percent in 2000, and the news comes as around 120 coal-based power plants are scheduled to close over the next five years due to environmental regulations, Bloomberg reports.
The announcement comes just days after Environmental Protection Agency chief Lee Zeldin reframed the agency’s purpose as to “lower the cost of buying a car, heating a home and running a business” in a two-minute video on X. Shortly after assuming office, Trump signed an executive order declaring a “national energy emergency” and telling the EPA to increase fossil fuel production. Read more at Bloomberg.
