President Trump announced yesterday that he is contemplating the idea of utilizing nearly 90,000 newly hired IRS agents to patrol the southern border, only days after imposing a freeze on hiring within the federal agency.
Speaking to a lively audience of supporters, the 47th president revealed that he might also take action to dismiss IRS workers, many of whom had their salaries covered by the $72 billion allocated to the agency under the Inflation Reduction Act.
“They hired, or tried to hire, 88,000 workers to go after you and we’re in the process of developing a plan to either terminate all of them, or maybe we’ll move them to the border,” he shared during a rally at Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
“I think we’re going to move them to the border where they are allowed to carry guns. You know, they’re so strong on guns. But these people are allowed to carry guns. So we will probably move them to the border,” he added.
Trump, 78, began his second term with a series of executive orders, one of which introduced a freeze on federal hiring, with exceptions for roles related to national security, public safety, and the military.
The freeze, lasting 90 days, will affect all federal agencies except the IRS, which will halt new hires until Trump’s administration, along with the newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), determines when it is necessary to bring on more agents and staff.
The Republican president, who also declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, outlined plans for an external revenue office that would manage all income from foreign sources, including tariffs.
Trump has long threatened to impose higher tariffs on countries that do not adhere to his immigration policies, particularly targeting Mexico and Canada with a proposed 25% tariff set to begin on February 1.
Additionally, Trump has suggested that he would impose a 10% to 20% tariff on all foreign goods, with Chinese imports facing tariffs as high as 60%.
During his inaugural speech on Monday, Trump celebrated the start of what he described as the “golden age” of America, promising significant trade reforms that would replace tax revenues with tariffs.
“I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families,” he stated.
“Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our Treasury – coming from foreign sources. The American dream will soon be back and thriving like never before.”
