President Trump has opted to back out of a proposed minerals agreement with Ukraine, instead recommending that the United States consider investing in nuclear power plants within the war-stricken country.
“We have moved beyond the economic mineral deal,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt informed The Post during her briefing on Wednesday, addressing ongoing negotiations regarding a potential cease-fire between Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump had a roughly one-hour conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, marking the first direct exchange between the two since Trump expelled Zelensky from the White House and abandoned plans for the mineral deal on February 28.
Trump proposed that the US “could be very helpful” in managing nuclear facilities in Ukraine by contributing “electricity and utility expertise,” according to Leavitt, who added that American involvement would be ideal for ensuring the “protection” of these critical resources.
