President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran on Sunday, saying he would consider military strikes and economic penalties if Tehran fails to reach an agreement with the United States regarding its nuclear activities.
Speaking by phone with NBC News, Trump confirmed that communication was ongoing between American and Iranian representatives, though he declined to offer further details.
“If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing,” Trump said. “But there’s a chance that if they don’t make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago.”
During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, Trump pulled the United States out of the 2015 nuclear accord, which had imposed strict constraints on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting international sanctions.
Following that withdrawal, Trump reinstated broad American sanctions on Iran. In response, Tehran significantly expanded its uranium enrichment efforts, far beyond the terms laid out in the original agreement.
Thus far, Iran has rejected Trump’s threats, showing no indication that it plans to return to the negotiating table under pressure of force.
According to a report by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that Tehran responded—via Oman—to a message from Trump in which he pressed for a fresh nuclear agreement.
