On Thursday, President Donald Trump warned that the European Union and Canada could face significantly higher tariffs if they collaborate in a way that harms the U.S. economy. He stated, “If the European Union works with Canada in order to do economic harm to the USA, large scale tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both in order to protect the best friend that each of those two countries has ever had.” This message was shared via a post on Truth Social.
Earlier this week, Trump introduced a 25% tariff on imported vehicles, further escalating the global trade conflict and sparking backlash from U.S. allies who threatened to retaliate. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, criticized the move, calling it “bad for businesses, worse for consumers.” Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the tariffs as a “direct attack” on Canadian workers and warned that Canada was considering retaliatory steps.
The tariffs on cars and light trucks are set to go into effect on April 3, the day after Trump is scheduled to announce reciprocal tariffs targeting the nations that contribute most to the U.S. trade deficit. These new measures are in addition to existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and goods imported from Mexico, Canada, and China.
In response to Trump’s actions, the European Union has announced it will hold off on its initial set of countermeasures until mid-April, which includes a 50% tariff on U.S. bourbon. In retaliation, Trump threatened to impose a 200% tariff on all wines and other alcoholic products from the EU should the EU proceed with its plan.
