Authorities are actively pursuing multiple individuals involved in a series of robberies targeting Uber drivers throughout New York City. On Thursday, the NYPD shared footage and images of the suspects, who are believed to be connected to a string of at least 22 robberies dating back to November 26.
The majority of these thefts—14 in total—occurred in Queens, spanning neighborhoods such as Bayside, Flushing, Maspeth, and Laurelton. In addition, there were six incidents on Staten Island, stretching from Port Richmond to Tottenville, as well as two in Brooklyn, according to police reports.
Law enforcement officials have stated that the criminals typically impersonate passengers by booking rides with Uber drivers. Once in the vehicle, they either request to view the driver’s phone to alter the route or simply snatch the phone forcefully.
Following the robbery, the thieves proceed to use the stolen phone to make unauthorized transactions from the victim’s account, authorities reported. One such transaction—made from the iPhone of a 42-year-old driver in East Elmhurst on December 13—amounted to a staggering $7,500. Another, made from the iPhone of a 44-year-old driver in Arrochar on January 8, totaled $10,000.
Altogether, the suspects have stolen over $37,500 through these fraudulent activities, law enforcement confirmed. Several Uber drivers suffered injuries during the robberies, often from being punched in the head, while another driver was threatened with a knife, according to the NYPD.
In certain cases, the robbers damaged or took the dash cams, though they were still captured on surveillance footage that is now being released by the police. Anyone who has information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
