Earlier this month, Ukrainian intelligence agents executed a clever scheme that echoed the tactics of Mossad, embedding explosive devices in Russian virtual reality goggles. The result: the devices detonated in the faces of Moscow’s drone operators, The NY Post reports.
“A series of explosions have been reported from goggles used by FPV drone pilots in Russian occupation forces,” a Ukrainian intelligence source told The Post on Thursday.
“Russian media outlets have reported dozens of similar incidents in various regions across the Russian Federation during the first days of February,” the source added.
The covert operation was carried out by Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate.
Explosive charges were placed inside the goggles distributed to FPV drone pilots by Russian volunteers.
“A substantial batch of goggles was procured for Russian Armed Forces drone operators to fulfill the mission,” said individuals directly involved in the operation. “Ukrainian intelligence officers then outfitted these with a remote detonation mechanism.”
“Following this, in coordination with the GUR, Russian volunteers distributed these ‘explosive’ goggles free of charge as part of a charitable initiative, sending them to the UAV units of the Russian military,” they explained.
The exact number of Russian soldiers wounded in the explosions remains unclear.
This operation bears a striking similarity to the famous missions of Israel’s Mossad, which famously sabotaged Hezbollah pagers throughout Lebanon, a move that ultimately crippled the terror organization.
